Chapter Three – Attraction

Dinner ended at last, and Aunt Bea insisted that Lily go with Grant to the sitting room, while she and the Hunts cleaned up.

“It’s how we’ve done it since the dawn of time,” she said, a chuckle in her voice, her face deadpan.

Lily laughed. The woman reminded her so much of Bea Arthur with her sharp wit and intelligence that she was sure she would find herself laughing a lot. She dutifully followed Grant into an intimate sitting room, set off from what appeared to be a library/office.

“Is this your man cave?” She asked with a smile, settling into the deep, stuffed chair by the window that he led her to.

“In a manner of speaking, it is,” Grant replied laughing, and turned as the door was pushed open and the largest dog known to man, or at least to Lily, trotted in. He was black and white, and he spared his master a glance and a rumbling woof before strolling over to where she sat. He walked up beside the chair, into which her body had sunk, so that if she needed to make a quick escape she was dead meat, sniffed her, and then extended a heavy tongue and licked her face. Then he woofed at her too, a deep hoarse sound, and lay at her feet.

She looked helplessly at Grant, who laughed and brought her a drink. “I hope you don’t mind that I chose for you this time,” he said, and when she shook her head, he sat in the chair across from her. “Meet Beau,” he said. “He’s a Newfie.”

“Whatever that is, he’s huge!” She exclaimed, her eyes popping as she looked at the massive creature lying at her feet.

Grant hid a smile. Beau had been his dog since he was a puppy, and he was going for six years old now. He had been a rescue dog. Grant told her the story. “I guess whoever got him as a puppy couldn’t handle how big he was getting and still tearing up the place. I found him wandering around down by the river, and it was clear that he had had an owner because he wasn’t afraid of me, and understood about bathroom rules and such. So I adopted him, and he has become an important part of the wellness program here.”

She reached down and stroked the dog’s head, and Beau cocked an eye at her, then put his head down again.

“I’m not surprised he’s decided to adopt you,” Grant said, sipping his gin and tonic. “He’s a pretty good judge of character. It’s almost as though he can smell good and evil on people. I think in your case, he’s smelled good.”

“So I’m his now?” She asked, chuckling.

“‘Fraid so,” he replied, grinning at her. “Expect him to be underfoot and walk accordingly. He’s a big dog...I wouldn’t want you to get hurt from an over-exuberance of love.”

“Big words, Mr. Hollister!” she quipped, laughing, and he laughed with her. He was glad to see her finally relax completely.
